Mostafa Mehrāyin, a sociologist and university professor, was arrested on Sunday, 14 June 2025, less than 24 hours after publishing an open letter addressed to Ali Khamenei, and was transferred to Evin Prison.
In this letter, Mehrāyin, in a forthright tone, demanded an immediate end to the war, a return to the negotiating table, and the resignation of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, emphasizing that the Islamic Republic lacks popular legitimacy and that its continued existence only serves to intensify crises.
He also called on the people to take to the streets holding white flags and chanting “Peace with the World,” and to strive for the establishment of a new order in Iran.
Media outlets close to security agencies immediately labeled Mehrāyin as one of “Mossad’s agents” following his arrest.
He had previously faced summons, trumped-up charges, and telephone threats for writing similar letters.
