140 graduates of Iran University of Science and Technology, in a statement, expressed concern over the condition of Hamid Bidar, a former student activist, and called for his immediate release and the annulment of his prison sentence.
In the statement, signed by 140 former students of the university, it is emphasized:
“We, as a group of Hamid’s friends and university peers, know him for his honesty and pursuit of justice. We testify that whether during his student activism or in his workplace and social interactions, Hamid always strived to avoid political games and cost-benefit calculations, and consistently supported what he believed to be right without compromise.”
The graduates, referring to Hamid Bidar’s dire condition in Greater Tehran Prison, described his detention conditions as “concerning” and added:
“Disturbing news about the way many political and ideological prisoners are being transferred and kept in appalling conditions has greatly intensified our and his family’s worries.”
According to this report, Hamid Bidar, a former student activist, had previously been sentenced by Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Amouzad, to 11 years in prison. This sentence was upheld in absentia by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals. His charges include: “insulting the sacred,” “insulting the Supreme Leader,” “propaganda against the regime,” “spreading lies,” and “disturbing public opinion on social media.” He was transferred to Evin Prison on June 5 to begin serving his sentence.
In closing, the signatories stated:
“We, the undersigned, while expressing concern about the situation of our former classmate Hamid Bidar, demand his immediate release and the revocation of his unjust sentence.”
Statement
We still cannot believe that our dear Hamid is behind bars, facing a harsh 11-year prison sentence. A month full of anxiety has passed, with the hope that this unbelievable sentence would be reviewed and reconsidered. But now, the alarming reports about the manner of transfer and the appalling conditions in which many political and ideological prisoners are being held have multiplied our and his family’s concerns.
Hamid Bidar is currently being held, along with many other inmates, in overcrowded small cells without basic hygiene facilities, in extremely difficult physical and psychological conditions.
We, as a group of Hamid’s friends and university peers, know him for his honesty and commitment to justice. We testify that—whether during his student activism or in his workplace and social relationships—Hamid consistently sought to remain untainted by political maneuvering or cost-benefit calculations, and stood by what he believed to be right without hesitation.
He was one of the few who believed in staying, building, and firmly defending what is just.
Someone so compassionate does not belong in prison—and neither his family, especially his mother and wife, deserve to endure such suffering.
We, the undersigned, while expressing concern about the condition of our former classmate Hamid Bidar, demand his immediate release and the annulment of his unjust sentence.
