Endless deprivations for students

University of Tabriz

Sadaf Heydari, a student admitted in 2021 to the University of Tabriz, was sentenced to two terms of suspension from studies for publishing a poem in an Instagram story coinciding with the day of Ebrahim Raisi’s death.

The day after Raisi’s death, at 9 PM, his family was contacted and informed that, by order of the President of the University of Tabriz, he was expelled from the dormitory and the university and had to vacate the dormitory immediately. These actions took place even though no disciplinary file had been opened and no ruling had been issued yet. The reasons for these actions were not communicated to him, and security personnel at the University of Tabriz threatened and insulted him, confiscating his student ID and demanding that he vacate the dormitory by morning. Despite the student’s poor health condition due to eye surgery, he was forced to vacate the dormitory under threat of detention and was later summoned to the disciplinary committee.

Ultimately, he was sentenced to two terms of suspension for publishing a poem on Raisi’s death day (without referring to any specific person), without the right to defense, and this was in addition to the physical difficulties he faced due to his expulsion from the dormitory following his eye surgery.
