On Saturday, May 10, 2025, a group of students at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences launched a protest against poor food quality and inadequate living conditions.
The students stated that the meals served at the university cafeteria are below acceptable standards and, in some cases, unfit for consumption.
Their main demand is an immediate and thorough improvement in the quality of cafeteria food. They emphasized that access to healthy, standard meals is the most basic welfare right of students.
With the start of the new academic year (1404), a wave of hunger strikes has been spreading across medical universities in Iran. Prior to Shiraz, three other hunger strikes occurred in the past month:
● April 8: Kashan University of Medical Sciences
● April 15: Tabriz University of Medical Sciences
● May 2: Zahedan University of Medical Sciences
