Dr. Hassan Bagherinia, a professor at Hakim Sabzevari University, has received a summons requiring him to appear within the next five days at Branch 921 of the Investigative Unit of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in District 9 of Mashhad to defend himself against the charge of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”
This summons comes despite the fact that he had already been summoned to court for June 1st (12 Khordad), where one of the charges in that case was also “propaganda against the regime.”
⁉️ Other charges related to the June 1st court session include:
-
“Insulting Islamic sanctities”
-
“Spreading falsehoods and disturbing public opinion”
-
“Assembly and collusion against national security”
-
“Forming an opposing group”
-
“Inciting military personnel to disobedience”
-
“Insulting the Supreme Leader”
-
“Inciting people to war and bloodshed”
-
“Encouraging violence on social media”
A verdict had previously been issued for most of these charges, sentencing Bagherinia to 10 years and 9 months in prison (source). According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, 6 years of this sentence is enforceable. Out of this period, 5 years have been suspended, meaning they will only be enforced if he commits another offense.
Additionally, as supplementary punishment, he has been banned from teaching and leaving the country for two years. The outcome of this new summons and the decision of the appeals court remain unclear.
in response to the renewed case-building by security agencies (source), he released a video directly addressing the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
In part of his statement, the professor says:
“Mr. Khamenei!
If power hasn’t deafened your ears
and voices like mine can still reach you…
know that we are still standing.”
