The commemoration of the anniversary of the murder of Dariush and Parvaneh Forouhar will be held today

Forouhar House

The passage reflects on the 11th anniversary of the tragic murders of Dariush Forouhar and his wife, Parvaneh Eskandari, who were killed on December 1, 1998, in what became known as the “Chain Murders” in Iran. The murders were part of a series of politically motivated killings of intellectuals and dissidents, including figures such as Mohammad Mokhtari, Mohammad Jafar Pouyandeh, Majid Sharif, and Pirouz Davani. These killings were attributed to an organized campaign by Iran’s security agencies.

Despite the widespread repression and the passage of time, the memory of Dariush and Parvaneh Forouhar, along with others who suffered similar fates, continues to be celebrated by their supporters and activists. The murderers, many of whom held prominent positions in Iran’s security apparatus, were not held fully accountable, and the political environment that allowed such acts of violence persists.

On the anniversary, a ceremony to honor their memory was planned by their daughter, Parastoo Forouhar, despite opposition from the Tehran Security Council. The ceremony aimed to commemorate their legacy and the broader struggle for freedom and justice in Iran.

The text also highlights the deepening repression and the political consequences of these killings, noting that those responsible for the murders have regained powerful positions in the Iranian government over time.
